Watching Hadestown: The Musical at the Odeon Cinema: Was It Worth It?
There is something special about seeing a musical, especially one with music that stays with you long after the performance has finished. We recently had the opportunity to watch Hadestown: The Musical at our local Odeon Cinema in Rochdale, and it was a fantastic experience.
I have been waiting for Hadestown to tour in the UK, but to date, no tour date has been released. Although the tickets were more expensive than we would usually expect to pay for a cinema trip, we thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, when you consider the cost of travelling to London to see the production in the West End, watching it at the cinema felt like a much more affordable way to experience this incredible musical.
If you love musical theatre but do not always have the time or budget for a trip to London, this cinema screening is well worth considering.
What Is Hadestown: The Musical About?
Hadestown is a musical that brings together two ancient Greek myths, following the stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and Persephone. It reimagines these familiar stories through a distinctive blend of folk, jazz and blues-inspired music. It’s toe-tapping stuff!
The story explores love, hope, hardship and the choices people make when faced with difficult circumstances. It has a darker, more atmospheric feel than some traditional musicals, with music that helps bring the characters and their emotions to life.
The production has enjoyed considerable success on Broadway and in London’s West End. The cinema version gives audiences the opportunity to experience a filmed performance of the stage production without having to travel to the theatre itself.
For anyone who has wanted to see Hadestown but has not managed to get to London, the cinema release offers a particularly appealing alternative as it did for us!
Our Experience Watching Hadestown at the Odeon
We had a great time watching Hadestown at the cinema. It was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a musical theatre production on the big screen, and the experience reminded me how enjoyable it can be to watch something a little different from a standard cinema film.
The music was the absolute highlight. It is absolutely amazing and gives the production so much of its character. The combination of musical styles creates a distinctive sound, and the songs help carry the story in a way that makes the whole experience feel immersive.
There is something lovely about being able to sit back and enjoy a theatrical performance without having to worry about the logistics of a trip to London. We could enjoy the show locally and still feel that we were experiencing something special.
I also think cinema screenings like this are a brilliant way to make theatre more accessible to people who might not otherwise get the chance to see a particular production.
Watching Hadestown at the Odeon gave us the chance to enjoy the musical without all those additional costs.
Are Cinema Tickets for Hadestown Expensive?
One thing worth mentioning is that the tickets were expensive for a cinema visit. If you are accustomed to paying ordinary cinema prices, you may find the cost a little surprising. We paid ยฃ60 for 3 tickets, plus popcorn and snacks, making it a very expensive night out.
However, I think it is worth looking at the bigger picture. This is not simply a standard film screening. You are watching a professionally filmed stage musical, featuring the performances, music and atmosphere of a West End production.
Seeing the live show in London would involve buying theatre tickets and potentially paying for train fares, parking, food and other expenses. Depending on where you live and how many people are going, those costs can make a theatre trip significantly more expensive.
The cinema screening is therefore a useful middle ground. It is still a special outing, and the tickets are not necessarily cheap, but it offers the opportunity to enjoy the production closer to home.
For us, the cost felt more reasonable when we considered it as an alternative to travelling to London to see the show.
Of course, the cinema experience is different from sitting in the theatre itself. You do not get quite the same feeling of being in the room with the performers, but you do get to watch the production on a large screen and appreciate the detail of the performances.
If you are a fan of musical theatre, I think this is an option worth considering.
Why the Music Makes Hadestown So Special
The music really is one of the best things about Hadestown. Its blend of folk, jazz and blues gives the musical a distinctive atmosphere, helping it stand apart from many other stage productions.
Rather than feeling as though the songs have simply been added to move the plot along, the music is central to the storytelling. It helps establish the mood, develop the characters and convey the emotional weight of the story.
Even if you are not particularly familiar with the Greek myths that inspired the production, the music helps draw you into the world of the musical.
It is also the sort of production that can appeal to people who enjoy listening to musical soundtracks as much as watching the performances themselves. The songs are a huge part of what makes Hadestown memorable.
For me, the music alone made the experience worthwhile. Combined with the opportunity to see the stage production on the big screen, it made for a really enjoyable trip to the cinema.
Is Hadestown at the Cinema Worth Watching?
For us, the answer is yes. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and I would recommend considering it if you enjoy musicals or are curious about seeing a West End production.
It is particularly appealing if travelling to London is not practical. Theatre tickets can be expensive, and when you add the cost of getting there, a trip to see a show can become a major expense. Being able to watch a production at a local cinema offers a more convenient alternative.
It is also a lovely option if you want to plan an evening out that feels a little different from an ordinary trip to the cinema. Rather than watching the latest blockbuster, you get to enjoy a full musical theatre performance.
The main thing to remember is that this is a limited cinema release, so it is important to check local screening dates rather than assume it will be available for weeks or months.
The film is rated PG, which is another useful detail for anyone considering whether to watch it with family. As always, parents should use their judgement about whether the themes and content are suitable for their children.
You can find the official listing and check screening information on the Odeon website.
Final Thoughts: A Brilliant Musical Without the Trip to London
We had a fantastic time watching Hadestown: The Musical at the Odeon Cinema. The tickets were expensive for a cinema visit, but the incredible music and the opportunity to experience a West End production without travelling to London made it worthwhile.
I think cinema screenings of stage productions offer a great alternative for people who love theatre but cannot always justify the cost of a trip to the capital. They allow you to enjoy performances that might otherwise be difficult to see, all from the convenience of a local cinema.
If you have been thinking about watching Hadestown, I would recommend checking whether it is showing at your nearest Odeon. The release is limited, so it is worth looking at the listings while you still have the opportunity.
For us, it was a brilliant experience and a reminder that you do not always need to travel far or spend a fortune on a full theatre trip to enjoy a special musical evening.
